Every day is a great day to bring something special home for your family's pup, but this weekend offers the perfect excuse to stock up on all those toys and treats you've been holding off on: National Dog Day.

National Dog Day began in 2004 and occurs every Aug. 26 in honor of the pooch who inspired it all, Sheltie.

Founder Colleen Paige was only 10 years old when her family welcomed their pup Sheltie, but the impact of their bond has been lifelong. According to the National Dog Day website, the annual event aims "to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort."
